wrench Known issues
  • Underperforming chipset/board

The motherboard or chipset may deliver subpar performance compared to similar products, which can result in reduced memory bandwidth, poor memory latency, and bad AGP performance. This can negatively impact overall system performance.

notes Notes

DRAM Interleave & Memory Behavior Notes

BIOS Setting: DRAM Bank Interleave

  • The BIOS for the MSI MS‑7104 provides an option for 8‑way DRAM Bank Interleave.
  • Do not use 8‑way interleave, although selectable, it is not supported by the chipset and will cause the system to fail POST, requiring a CMOS reset to recover.
  • The chipset supports a maximum of 2‑way or 4‑way interleave.
  • To successfully run 4‑way interleave, you must use RAM modules with 4 physical banks.

Memory Performance Characteristics

  • DRAM access latency is very high (~240 ns) unless using:
    • a 800 MHz FSB CPU
    • paired with DDR‑400 memory
Other CPU/DRAM speed combinations result in significantly degraded memory performance.

VIA PCI Latency Behavior

  • The board is affected by the VIA PCI latency quirk, common to chipsets of this era.
  • The VIA Latency Patch provides only minimal improvement on this platform.
