  • DALLAS RTC coin cell empty

The motherboard's Real-Time Clock (RTC) chip contains a coin cell that may have drained, causing the loss of CMOS settings. This can result in an inability to save settings, causing system instability or failure to boot. To fix this, the RTC chip can be replaced with an equivalent or repaired by cutting into it and soldering on a new external coin cell holder. Replacement guides are available at https://github.com/necroware/nwX287 or https://github.com/necroware/nw12887, depending on the actual chip used.

notes Notes
  • Integrated PCI Promise IDE controller with ATA2 support.

  • BIOS setup may crash when an IDE drive larger than 2.1 GB is configured.

  • PS/2 mouse and keyboards are supported.

  • Has additional power plug for PCI power

  • Although AMD 5x86 CPU might be detected as "CPU = ??? 100" by BIOS, it operates at 133 with write-back cache.

  • Used in Gateway 2000 computers with part number MBDPCI003AxWW

  • Also known as "Aries 486 PCI non-integrated motherboard".

  • IMPORTANT: The memory sockets, while labelled with the lowest number on the inside of the board and highest number on the outside of the board, are actually reversed. Bank 0 is the slot closest to the edge of the board - so fill that one first - if you start at the inside of the board, it will not post, and hang up on post code 08-09

  • Almost all of the jumpers functions and settings are silkscreened clearly on the board.

  • TBD: There is a Turbo LED header, but a Turbo Switch header cannot be found. Additionally, the usual keyboard commands do not make any difference on the turbo state.
